The EPS pump is structurally similar to vertical turbine pumps. Basically, an electric motor drives the pump and increases the kinetic energy of the fluid. The pump housing consists of a centrifugal pump with a vertical shaft whose output fluid pressure depends on the impeller rotation. Pumps use mechanical sealing to prevent water from penetrating the engine. The motor shell and pump are made of aluminum alloy and impeller and the pump cap is made of ductile cast iron and stainless steel; and all screws are made of stainless steel, which increases its corrosion resistance by several times. If more than one impeller is used at the pump, the multi-stage flap pump is said to have the blades either mounted on a shaft or separate.
