Like all compression chillers, the basis of mini-chillers is the vapor compression refrigeration cycle (carno). In this way, the refrigerant vapor is compressed by the compressor and its pressure and temperature increase. The refrigerant is then discharged into the ambient air through a condenser to become liquid. The liquid leaving the condenser undergoes a large pressure drop as it passes through the expansion valve. As some of the refrigerant evaporates, it will further reduce the temperature of the refrigerant. This type of cold refrigerant entering the evaporator cools the flow of water passing through it and returns it to the compressor after evaporation.
